Potassium Pentaborate is most importantly utilized in automotive industry as an additive for gear lubricants. Addition of this chemical to gear results in increase in load carrying capacity and improvement in wear resistance. It is known to have chemical formula K[B5O7(OH)2] and is synthesized by hydrothermal reaction. This compound is a mild alkaline salt which is prepared from controlled reaction between potassium hydroxide, boric acid, and water. Potassium Pentaborate also finds application in metal refining as cover flux, for silver soldering, and for delaying cement settling in oil well drilling.
